The Need For a Positive News Only Day (May 7, 2008)Why is the news and media so negative? A question I seem to be seeing, and hearing more and more. i hear and see it at social networking sites, blog sites, and even in coffee shops. Is there a simple answer to this question, or would I have easier time explaining the meaning of life to my 5 year old daughter. Believe it or not there is a simple answer to this question. The news is negative because; people are more likely to watch a negative news piece than a positive one. After 911 the news networks saw a huge spike in ratings. I doubt they have been able to recapture a spike like that since. They sure keep trying. With crisis after crisis, pandemics, threats to national security, and the list goes on and on. Do you want to stop seeing negative news? Here is the simple solution. Turn the news off. Don't like the tone of a certain newspaper, don't buy it. At same time we should encourage others to the same. Eventually if enough people stop watching or buying the news they're going to have to increase the amount of positive news they put out. We have the power, we are now in control of our TV sets. The only thing that's wrong with our TV's; they're on the wrong channel. Or perhaps, if every channel is negative we may have to turn all of them off. On the flip side if you know of program or person spreading positive news let others know. We must spread the positive. In the past few months I have been able to create a persona of being a highly positive person. Well that persona isn't entirely true. I can remember not more than six months ago, I was watching the news and began yelling at the television. When suddenly I realized (or maybe my loving wife pointed out) I wasn't going to win this argument. I had to go about my battle with negative news from a different angle. In that moment POSITIVEPAGE was born and in that moment I became (As Sabrina Gibson, a professional speaker, put it to me recently) "the change I wanted to see in the world." We all want to see change in the world and we all have the power to become that change. Which brings me to my point. This Sunday many people (myself included) are going to be involved in a good news only day or #gnod on Twitter (the social networking site). I encourage all who read this to join in. If enough people contribute we can really make a difference. What can I do? You may be asking yourself. Well for starters you can post links to positive articles on twitter. If you aren't familiar with Twitter you can email a link or an article to me @ what@positivepage.com I'll make sure you get the credit you deserve. Don't just send it to me there are numerous sites that focus on positive news send the link to all of them. Send a link about this article to others eventually we will have enough people interested to create an impact on Twitter. There are others who I must mention. Check out this article encouraging others to do the same. Hopefully we can impact someone along the way. NO scratch that we can and will make on impact on many people along the way. We are the change we wanted to see in the world.
