The Need For a Positive News
Only Day
(May 7, 2008) Why is the news and media so negative? A question I
seem to be seeing and hearing more and more, all over the social
networking, blog sites, and even in coffee shops. Is there a simple answer
to this question, or would I have easier time explaining the meaning of
life to my 5 year old daughter.
Believe it or not
there is a simple answer to this question. The news is negative because
people are more likely to watch a negative news piece than a positive
one. After 911 the news networks saw a huge spike in ratings. I doubt they
have been able to recapture a spike like that since. They sure keep trying,
what with crisis after crisis, pandemics, threats to national security and
the list goes on and on.
Do you want to stop
seeing negative news? Here is the simple solution.
HOUSING STARTS UP 22.2% FROM ORIGINAL FORECASTS (March 25, 2009) Some positive news out of the housing and manufacturing sectors today according to a report from the U.S. Commerce Department. ?New orders for manufactured durable goods in February increased $5.5 billion or 3.4 percent to $165.6 billion. This increase follows six consecutive monthly decreases,? and was welcome on Wall Street as the many sectors were up.
The increase was followed by better than expected housing data. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released a report stating ?Privately-owned housing starts in February were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 583,000. This is 22.2 percent above the revised January estimate of 477,000.? Simply put there were way more housing starts in February than expected. 22% is a substantial number. Building permit authorizations were also higher than forecasted.
Obviously there are signs that people are regaining consumer confidence. Of course the numbers are no where near the 2008 numbers. Although any news that shows an increase should be reported as just that, an increase.
The combined news created some real optimism in investors and hopefully will add to the optimism in consumers as well.
